1. A completed crafty project! I loved doing a spot of cross-stitching when I was younger and have been meaning to do a little cross-stitch project since I came across these lovely patterns on Etsy. I think this pattern will be my next project!

3. Our lemon tree is flowering.....I can see a lemon meringue pie in the not too distant future!

Vintage Patterns

Post Christmas must be a time for organising, sorting and cleaning out your nest. Everybody seems to be doing it (including me). Mum was having a tidy up last week and came across all of her old dressmaking patterns (I gladly took all of them off of her hands).....

1. I absolutely love the illustrations on vintage patterns. Colourful, cute and quirky! The really old 'Home Journal' patterns belonged to my Great Nana Pink!

1. Cupcakes for a special friend. I made my own little heart shaped cupcake toppers with some toothpicks and scraps of felt! So sweet and easy!

2. My girls + a selection of sweet treats + a birthday to celebrate = a lovely Saturday afternoon!

3. A gift from my little brother. His latest wood carved creation. Mr. Rustic Reindeer. He has found a comfortable new home next to our Christmas tree. Welcome to the family Mr. Reindeer!

1. Pretty cake stands made from thrifted plates and vases. I saw the tutorial for these in peppermint magazine. The perfect Christmas gift for the cake loving ladies in my life. This crafty lady was behind the peppermint tutorial. Her work and blog are such an inspiration!

2. Pretty Christmas tags from 'The Library Shop' at the State Library of Queensland. Yesterday was such a lovely day, a trip to the GOMA Christmas Markets, a browse through The Library Shop and The Gallery Store and lunch with a special friend.

3. A pretty thrifted teacup from my sweet Mum! She knows me well!

1.The cutest little vintage tutu I ever did see. It is a size 1 and I think it would make a perfect 1st birthday party dress. Thank-you ebay.

2. I was so delighted to see some of my pillows featured in a new DIY decorating book. The pillows in the linen cupboard are moose & bird. Yay!

3. One of my pillows was also featured in the gardening section of the same book! Double Yay!

1. Bits + Pieces on my inspiration board. The crochet pot holder is a new find. I picked it up for a mere $1.00 at my local thrift store. A quick napisan and it's as good as new! I adore the colours and the wonders of napisan!

2. The beginning of our bedroom makeover.....a letterpress print from BESPOKE letterpress boutique. Their online shop is full of lovely things! And their blog is pretty special too!

3. A gift from my little (I should say younger) brother. His latest wood carved creation. Such a talent! This guy will be making his home above our TV.

Crafty Folk: PM Ceramics

I had a little stall at the BrisStyle Indie Twilight Markets a few weeks ago and while meandering around the market I came across the work of Brisbane ceramicist Pattie Murray. I've always loved ceramic treasures and was so pleased when I came across her stall.

I couldn't choose what I wanted to take home with me so I consulted with my personal advisor (my Mum) and decided on a lovely ceramic necklace with the word love scripted on it. If it didn't look so suspicious I would have stayed and stared at all of the goodies for much longer. I also bought a lovely little brooch for a special friend's birthday at the end of the month. Similar to this one.

Is there such a thing as a 'Bad Blogger' Award. If so, I am going to nominate myself for it! I am afraid I have been quite negligent over the past month. My poor little blog has received no love at all. I've been busy blogging a few times a week over here, caring for wee Spudley who is a little under the weather, working and madly sewing a wholesale order for a shop with the sweetest of names.....One Fine Day. I'm really excited to be back though. I hope you have been well!

My much loved rose bush is in full bloom at the moment.....it must be enjoying the sunshine as much as I am!

Baked with Love: Ginger Kisses

My latest baking adventure involved these 'cloud-like' Ginger Kisses. Substituted to be gluten and dairy free of course!

Makes: 12 large kisses

Ingredients: Cakes
230g margarine (dairy free), softened
170g caster sugar
2 eggs, at room temperature
4 tsp golden syrup, warmed slightly
2 cups gluten free plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
2 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp bicarbonate soda
2 tbs hot water
Icing sugar for dusting

Ingredients: Icing
3 tbs margarine (dairy free)
1 1/2 cups icing sugar (gluten free)
1 tsp vanilla essence
1 1/2 tsp ground ginger
Boiling water added to achieve correct consistency!

Method:
1. Preheat oven to 180c and line baking trays with baking paper.
2. Sift together the flour, baking powder, ginger and cinnamon.
3. Dissolve the bicarb in the hot water.
4. Using an electric mixer, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time and then the warmed syrup.
5. Fold in the sifted dry ingredients and then the dissolved bicarb.
6. Place small teaspoonfuls of the mixture onto the trays allowing room to spread. Bake for 10 minutes.

Icing:
1. Using an electric mixer beat the butter, icing sugar, ground ginger and vanilla essence together. Add the boiling water a little at a time until a desirable consistency is achieved. Beat until the mixure is light and fluffy.
2. Spread icing between cooled ginger kisses and sprinkle with icing sugar.

By early October I will have attended three Baby Showers in the space of a month! The Shower I went to on the weekend was to celebrate the upcoming arrival of a friend's little man. I came across this cookbook a few weeks ago and immediately fell in love with all of the goodies inside! If you love traditional, old-school recipes then you will LOVE this book. As the name suggests it is filled with recipes from Country Shows right around Australia.

Some of my favourite recipes from the book which I can't wait to try are:

Ginger Fluff - contributed by Annie Swanson, Tullamore Show (this recipe only has 2 dessertspoons of plain flour so I should be able to substitute it for a gluten free alternative easily).
Honey Roll - contributed by Ruby Lockyer, Glen Innes Show (this one only has 2 teaspoons of plain flour. Hooray!)
Cornflour Sponge Sandwich - contributed by Shirley Downey, Cumnock Show (no wheat flour, double hooray!)

Vintage Lovelies.....

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to be given some vintage lovelies that belonged to my Great Nana. While all vintage treasures are welcome at my place those that once belonged to a loved one are just that little bit more special. They have sentimental value and hold lots of memories! I only vaguely remember my Great Nana as I was quite young when she passed away but one thing I do remember about her is that she always wore fire engine red nail polish. A lady of great style in my books!

I remember looking at this sweet teacup and saucer in my Nana's kitchen dresser over the years! It's one thing that has always stuck in my mind. And really, how could you forget this?

The possibilities are endless - gift tags? Artwork?

White Chocolate Rocky Road

It's become a bit of a tradition that I make a little sweet treat for my Dad every Birthday, Father's Day and Christmas! My specialty is homemade marshmallows (Dad's favourite) but this Father's Day I decided I would surprise him with some White Chocolate Rocky Road - Gluten and Dairy Free of course!

White Chocolate Rocky Road

{Gluten & Dairy Free}

200g packet GF natural lolly snakes
100g packet GF mini pink & white marshmallows
100g pistachios, roasted
3/4 cup coconut, toasted
450g dairy free white chocolate

1. Grease and line a square 20x20cm baking tray.
2. Cut lolly snakes into small chunks with kitchen scissors.
3. Roast pistachios and toast coconut.
4. Mix lolly snakes, marshmallows, pistachios and coconut in a bowl.
5. Melt white chocolate and mix through dry ingredients.
6. Pour into tray and place in refrigerator until set.
7. Cut into squares and share with your loved ones xoxo.

Do you know what I really love about my beloved frankie magazine? Apart from the pretty pictures and the heartfelt stories I love the way they support independent artists, crafters, designers, photographers, musicians and writers in each and every issue.

One of my creations, a blushing little Winking Girl Pillow, was featured in the latest issue, no. 43, amongst lots of other pretty pillows. Did you see it? If not, it's on page 126/127.

This issue is definitely worth an afternoon of reading, there's so much to love (as usual), including a selection of stickers for your homemade jam, illustrated by Dawn Tan and Amy Borrell, and a crafty D.I.Y from Pip's new book, Make! Hey!

I really really really wish that there was time for just a small amount of crafting each and everyday. Over the past few weeks I seriously feel as though I have been suffering from 'lack of craft' related stress, I've barely stepped a foot inside my sewing room. So, over the weekend it was my goal to start making atleast one thing! And I did it.....

Lovely Linens

Happy Monday blogland friends! I trust your weekend was full of fun and surprises! Mine was relatively quiet, a bit of pottering in the garden, a spot of baking and a brisk walk with little Spud followed by a lovely dinner at Mum and Dad's. My little brother cooked up a delightful feast of homemade pizza, honeycomb icecream and tiramisu. Delicious with a capital D!

There was also a lot of laundering going on over the weekend, laundering of a good kind not the bad. Mum and I have collected lots of lovely new linens over the past few weeks which needed a bit of freshening up. Below are some of my favourites.....

I heart Vintage Florals

Well, it's fair to say that things have been a little quiet on the moose & bird front of late. I've been super busy with other day time adventures such as work and pottering about the house. Hence the reason my blog has been a little neglected.

But I'm slowly getting back into the swing of things. Mum and I enjoyed an op-shop hop a few weeks ago as a birthday treat. We enjoyed a delicious morning tea at Vanilla Pod before finding our way over to Latrobe Terrace at Paddington for a spot of thrifting. I found a few goodies.....with a common theme.....florals! There's just something about vintage floral motifs that I just can't resist.

I thought I would share a lovely story with you.....a few weeks ago I was surprised with a lovely parcel in the post. I wondered what it could possibly be? Inside was a package wrapped in soft tissue and a little card that read.....

"In a cleanup, my Mum came across these buttons from the past. She thinks some might be bakelite. I thought you might enjoy using them in your work."

I absolutely adore vintage buttons so was overcome with excitement when I opened the parcel to find these gorgeous buttons. The lovely lady who sent them to me was Marie from Ruby & Rose Interiors at Montville. I was so grateful and couldn't believe Marie's kindness and the fact that she had thought of me when her Mum found these buttons. {Flea Market Find}

Everytime I see a Holly Hobbie illustration, it never ceases to take me back to my childhood! They are always the sweetest illustrations full of whimsy and innocence. My Mum found a 'Holly Hobbie's Special Days' book at our local thrift store this week. It was printed in 1978, so it has definitely seen better days but will be perfect for making cards and stationery. Below are some of the images from the book.....

.....cardmaking! There's been very little time for 'crafting' of late (much to my disappointment) but I did manage to whip up this little 'I heart U' card yesterday to give to my husband for our 5 year wedding anniversary tomorrow. Everything I make always ends up being really 'girly' and excessive so I'm glad that this card is simple and 'boyish' looking!

State Library of Queensland, in partnership with Cancer Council Queensland's Australia's Biggest Morning Tea, is looking for special tea cups and tea related stories to share as part of their 'Tea & Me' collection. Seeing this collection come together has inspired me to share some pictures of my favourite tea cups and the story behind them.....

I was given these tea cups by my Mum when I got married. They were taken from her 'crazy tea set' and given to me so I could start my own. I will treasure them forever. Floral tea cups with gold trim are my favourite!

Flea Market Finds.....

Sunday just wouldn't be Sunday without a trip over to Sophie's to join in with her lovely 'Flea Market Finds' meme! I particularly love the vintage 'plate wall' that Sophie shared last week as part of Flea Market Finds. I have a real affection for pretty saucers and have quite a little collection of them myself.

Above are some of my recent thrifted treasures. My Mum found the cross-stitched bird wall hanging at a local op-shop. They came as a set of two and are now hanging as part of a little cluster of frames in our spare bedroom!

The red mugs were a gift from my little brother. He found them at the Mill Markets in Daylesford on a recent trip to Melbourne to visit my older brother! What an 'ace' little brother he is! Not only does he bake me yummy gluten free goodies, but he also buys me vintage treasures when he goes away! xoxo They are the perfect size for a warm cup of chai tea.....my favourite!

I absolutely adore all of the handmade crochet goodies from UK based label 'emma lamb'. I particularly love how each one of the creations has its very own 'old fashioned' name! One day (in the very distant future I imagine) I hope to be able to crochet beautiful things like this! Happy Sunday thrifty friends! I'm so excited to be joining in with Sophie's 'Flea Market Finds' meme again this week. I always enjoy reading Sophie's blog to see what lovely vintage treasures she has found. I was so pleased to hear that she is now opening her very own vintage store, Sophie Isobel Vintage.

This week I added these lovely treasures to my collection of thrifty finds! A green owl vase which Mum found at a local op-shop.....

.....and this beautiful hand cross-stitched rose wall hanging! Vintage floral wall hangings are one of my favourite things at the moment!

Mother's Day

I spent a lovely day at Mum & Dad's on Sunday celebrating Mother's Day with my family! I thought I would share some photos from the day.....

Mum had these beautiful flowers on the table.....

These sweet Cath Kidston napkins were part of Mum's Mother's Day Gift.....

Spud enjoyed the sunshine.....

And my little brother cooked up a feast fit for a Queen! Seafood Paella and Creamy Garlic Prawns with a Salted Caramel, Dark Chocolate & Banana Meringue!

He even made me a selection of gluten and dairy free goodies so I didn't miss out on all of the tasty fun, a mini loaf Carrot & Spice Cake, a Rosemary, Apple & Almond Tea Cake and some mini Lemon Tartlets. It was all delicious! And what I find really amazing is that he didn't even use a recipe to create these tasty treats!

Fluid Magazine

There's a new e-magazine in town, devoted to 'distinctive businesses and the personalities that have created them'. It is called 'Fluid' and their April issue is out now. I absolutely adore the cover of this issue with artwork by Mulberry Muse!

moose & bird was lucky enough to be featured along with some other great local 'handmadies' including Retro Bird Designs and Loose Leaf Paper! Thank-you Fluid magazine for the great feature!

Flea Market Find!

I received a belated birthday package in the mail this week (I turned 27 on the 14th March). I was delighted when I opened the package to find this sweet wooden tea box.....I do love my tea!

Even more excitement was to follow when I opened it to find a lovely stash of crafty goodness.....I can't wait to use the 'From the Kitchen of' stamp!

Amongst the crafty goodness was this sweet little thrifted owl jar.....it was an Avon cream jar in a previous life but has now found its home on my bedroom dresser with some other special little trinkets.

My Creative Space!

In 'My Creative Space' this week I have been working on some new Doily Brooches, round in shape instead of oval.....

I have also been sewing some Pear Shaped Doorstops for the upcoming BrisStyle Indie Twilight Markets, all they need now is some stuffing and a stem and leaf.....

As well as making a Sunglass Print Pillow for a friend's birthday!

Baked with Love: Coconut Ice!

I've been making Coconut Ice as a special little treat for my Grandma! It's her favourite.....

The recipe is so simple and makes a great little home baked gift idea! Easter perhaps?

Coconut Ice

1 can of condensed milk

3 1/3 cups icing sugar

4 1/4 cups coconut

Cochineal (added to half the mixture)

1. Measure all the ingredients into a bowl.

2. Mix well.

3. Divide mixture in half.

4. Press white half into bottom of tin.

5. Colour the other half with a few drops of cochineal.

6. Press pink mixture over white.

7. Chill in fridge until firm.

8. Cut into small squares.

Enjoy!

Hello friends! So sorry for my absence from blogland over the past few weeks. My lovely Mum kindly pointed out to me yesterday that I needed to update my blog. So this one's for my Mum! Hi Mum!Things have been so busy around here lately with work, shop orders, markets, life etc. etc.

What better way to get back into the blogging rythm than with a little bit of 'Flea Market Finds' goodness with Sophie. These gorgeous vintage buttons were thrifted this week, Mum found them for just $1 a packet. I love the colours, red, turquoise, yellow, pink and green. Love.....

Flood Crisis

By now you would have heard about the devastating floods that engulfed parts of Queensland over the past week. Thank-you to all those lovely people, some who only know me via my blog, who have emailed and called to check that my family and I were safe. Luckily for us, we were not in harm's way, but unfortunately that can't be said for all.

If you would like to offer assistance to those in need but aren't sure how to go about it you may be interested in purchasing an item from the BrisStyle 'Handmade Ark Appeal'. Not only will you be purchasing a piece of handmade goodness but you will also be supporting the thousands of Queenslanders that have lost everything in the devastating floods. A group of lovely people from the Brisbane Etsy Street Team have kindly donated goods to be sold with all or a percentage of sales going towards the Premier's Flood Relief Appeal.

You may also be interested in the 'Hope Softies' drive being organised by the lovely Steph from Mon Petit Poppet. One thing I really enjoy about gift giving is the packaging. I love using brown paper, some lovely grosgrain ribbon and a handmade flower or paper trinket to decorate the top. My weekend was a busy one with the BrisStyle Indie Eco Market on Saturday morning followed by an afternoon of High Tea for a 5th birthday, and a sunny day at the Young Designers Market on Sunday. Crafty Folk: pass the parcel!
